Meriden is a city in New Haven County in the state of Connecticut. It is located 82 miles north-east of New York, New York and is part of the New Haven - Meriden metropolitan statistical area. Meriden was originally part of Wallingford. It was granted a separate meetinghouse in 1727, became a town in 1806, and incorporated as a city in 1867.
It was named after Meriden in the West Midlands of England. It developed the nickname the “Silver City” in the 1800’s due to the large number of cutlery and related products manufactured here by companies such as International Silver and Meriden Cutlery. Another notable Meridan company began by Charles Parker and his younger brother, who manufactured a wide variety of products‚ from steam engines, train wheels and printing presses to piano stools. During the American Civil War Parker's Meriden Machine Company was under Union contract to produce 10,000 repeating rifles and 15,000 Springfield rifles. Parker developed his own shotgun, “The Gun of 1866,” which led to Parker and his sons opening the Parker Brothers Gun Company in 1868.
Running alongside the city is the Metacomet Ridge. This mountainous traprock ridgeline stretches from Long Island Sound to nearly the Vermont border. Notable peaks in Meriden include the Hanging Hills, Lamentation Mountain, Chauncey Peak, and Besek Mountain. Castle Craig was constructed among the Hanging Hills in Hubbard Park and has been a city landmark for over a century.
The Quinnipiac River cuts through the southwest quadrant of the city and through two hills for almost a mile. This stunning land characteristic results in a gorge full of exposed sandstone and brownstone cliffs. This unique feature has been named Harbour Brook and the river that cuts through the town from the north east to the south west empties into Hanover Pond in South Meriden.
The oldest house in Meriden, the Solomon Gosse House, was built by Solomon Goffe in 1711. Today it stands as a museum. The city has numerous parks, golf courses and also some nearby ski areas. Other attractions in and around Meridan include Barnes Museum, Hubbard Park, Giuffrida Park, Hunter Golf Club, Mount Southington and Powder Ridge.
