Middletown is a city in Middlesex County in the state of Connecticut. It is located along the Connecticut River, 8 miles east of Meridan and 16 miles south of Hartford in the central part of the state. The city benefits from easy access to the nearby cities and towns that it shares the Hartford metropolitan area with.

In 1650 the town was incorporated under the name Mattabeseck and functioned as a busy sailing port. In 1653 it changed its name to Middletown and slowly developed into an industrial centre. Today Middletown is largely a residential city and college town. It is home to Middlesex Community College, Wesleyan University and two Roman Catholic high schools, Xavier High School and Mercy High School, all of which attract students from surrounding communities.

Along the west side of Middletown is the Metacomet Ridge. This mountainous traprock ridgeline stretches from Long Island Sound to nearly the Vermont border. The Mattabesett Trail traverses 50 miles along the ridge and notable mountains in Middletown include Higby Mountain and the north side of Lamentation Mountain.

Harbour Park is a recreation area on the Connecticut River that features a boardwalk, restaurant/nightclub, fishing, seasonal boat excursions, and the Middletown High School and Wesleyan University crew boathouses. The July 4th festivities and the Connecticut Head of the Regatta event are conducted from Harbour Park each year.

Oddfellows Playhouse is a well known youth theatre group that pulls in children of all ages from all over the state to learn theatre skills. Oddfellows also runs the Children's Circus of Middletown where children learn circus skills and put on a free show for close to a thousand people. Middletown is also host to the Kidcity Children's Museum. This former home of Judge Elmer is a hands-on play space where children ages 1 through 8 can learn through play.
