Milford is a city in New Haven County in the state of Connecticut. It is located between Bridgeport and New Haven on the coastline in South Connecticut and is within the Bridgeport metropolitan area. The city contains the incorporated borough of Woodmont and the unincorporated village of Devon and benefits from easy access to the nearby cities and towns with whom it shares the coastline.
Milford was historically known for shipbuilding, farming and oystering with a small division of the city opening industrial facilities. Milford also was known as a beach resort for residents of New Haven and Bridgeport in the early 1900’s.The resort quality of the area is still felt today through several beaches, Silver Sands State Park, the Connecticut Audubon Society Coastal Center at Milford Point, Charles Island, two golf courses, and numerous other recreational facilities available for residents and tourists. Today’s diversified economy supports manufacturing, retail and service industries as well as manufacturers of consumer products, fabricated metals, plastics, dot.com companies and hi-tech firms.
Seventeen miles of Long Island Sound coastline funnel into the harbour that winds its way to meet the Wepawaug River in the heart of town. Milford owns three islands in the Housatonic River: Fowler Island, Duck Island and Nells Island. Charles Island is part of the Silver Sands State Park and is a protected bird nesting ground. There is a sand bar accessible during low tide that people can walk on from Silver Sands Beach to Charles Island.
The Oyster Festival is Milford’s own annual festival that has grown from a tiny local one-day celebration of the oyster and seaside community into one of Connecticut’s summer highlights. Visitors have a choice of activities including entertainment for children and music fans, harbour canoe and kayak races, over 200 arts and crafts vendors from around the country, a classic car show and tremendous food offered by local non-profit civic organizations.
Downtown Milford blends small town feeling with the charm and the sense of history of an English settlement. A substantial art community colours the city and the Milford Cultural Center offers various events throughout the year. Famed sites include the Firehouse Art Gallery, the Hotchkiss Bridge, Memorial Bridge and the romantic Victorian classic New England Inns.
