Mystic is a village and census-designated place in New London County in the state of Connecticut. It is located on coastline in the south-east part of the state. Mystic is in the New London - Norwich area and benefits from surrounding amenities in nearby cities such as New London, Norwich and Waterford. Mystic has no independent government because it is not a legally recognized municipality in the state of Connecticut. Rather, Mystic is located within the towns of Groton (west of the Mystic River, and also known as West Mystic) and Stonington (east of the Mystic River). The village sits on the Mystic River, which flows into Long Island Sound, providing access to the sea. The Mystic River Bascule Bridge crosses the river in the center of the village.

Mystic's nautical connection can be seen at Mystic Seaport, the nations’ largest maritime museum. Several beautifully preserved sailing ships and seaport buildings are displayed here, most notably the whaler Charles W. Morgan.

Mystic is best known perhaps for The Mystic Aquarium. The principal shareholder was Ohio industrialist and philanthropist Kelvin Smith. It was the vision of Mr. Kelvin Smith that the aquarium would become a leader in aquatic animal research. Mystic Aquarium’s early researchers included William Kelley and Richard Segedi, whose pioneering efforts led to the formulation of artificial seawater used by public aquariums, home hobbyists, and marine facilities worldwide. The Aquarium showcases Californian sea lions, an XD theatre ride, and educational hands-on exhibits displaying water conservation in action. In addition, Mystic Aquarium rescues and rehabilitates marine mammals and sea turtles and has established collaborations with the entire Northeast Stranding Network. Stranded marine mammals allow for the unique opportunity to study wild animals with compromised health. The aquarium is uniquely positioned as a leader in aquatic animal research given its longstanding history, unique aquatic animal collection available, scientific and veterinary expertise and most recent capability of conducting in-house research with a new research laboratory on site.

An interesting fact about Mystic is that less than 50% of adults are married and more people can be found in one-person households than in most other towns. College degrees are common in Mystic and the town is fortunate in that not many of its residents suffer poverty. People say that the town is full of unmarried people with good incomes. Although over 91% of Mystic’s commuters drive to work, the town offers good opportunities for both biking and walking.
