Naugatuck is a consolidated borough and town in New Haven County in the state of Connecticut. It is located 5 miles south of Waterbury and 70 miles north-east of New York, New York. The town is part of the Waterbury metropolitan statistical area.
Naugatuck was originally settled in by Europeans in1701 as a farming community, but with the Industrial Revolution the area developed into a mill town. The chief product manufactured in Naugatuck was rubber. The United States Rubber Company maintained their corporate headquarters there until the 1980s producing rubber footwear under the brand name Keds, and Naugahyde, an imitation leather fabric. An increase in the price of sulphuric acid, which was needed in the rubber reclaiming processes, led to the company forming the Naugatuck Chemical Company. In 1904 the company became forefront of the chemical industry in the United States. Naugatuck Chemical remained a subsidiary of the U.S. Rubber Co. until 1970, when they moved to Middlebury, Connecticut as the Uniroyal Chemical Co.
Naugatuck also produced other things, ranging from needles and safety pins to candy bars. The end of 20th century brought a decline in the American manufacturing industry and the town turned into a bedroom community. Today the town is a middle class area surrounded by several affluent communities such as Middlebury and Oxford. Naugatuck’s convenient access to major highways and high performing school districts make it an appealing place to reside.
The town is affectionately referred to as "Naugy" by its residents and spans both sides of the Naugatuck River just south of Waterbury. It gained nationwide attention when the movie War Of The Worlds (2005 film) was filmed there and when Naugatuck's Nardellis' Restaurant was shown in a few food programs on The Travel Channel.
Attractions in and around Naugatuck include the Quassy Amusement Park, Timexpo Museum, Mattatuck Museum, Railroad Museum of New England, Southford Falls State Park and Mount Southington.
