New Britain is a city in Hartford County in the state of Connecticut. It is located approximately 9 miles southwest of Hartford at the geographic center of Connecticut. The city is serviced by U.S. Route 6 and Connecticut State Highways 9 and 72 and has direct access to Interstate Highways I-84 and I-91. It is about two hours away from both Boston and New York and is home to Central Connecticut State University and Charter Oak State College.
New Britain was settled in 1687 and incorporated as a city in 1871. It saw its industrial identity defined in the late 19th century when Frederick Stanley established Stanley's Bolt Manufactory . In 1857 his cousin Henry Stanley founded The Stanley Rule and Level Company. The two companies merged in 1920, and the Stanley Rule and Level Company became the Hand Tools Division of Stanley Works. "Stanley/Bailey" planes were prized by woodworkers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and remain popular among wood craftsmen today. By the early 20th century, New Britain became known as the "Hardware City" as well as the "Hardware Capital of the World", having become America's largest hardware manufacturing center.
New Britain has the largest Polish population of any city in Connecticut. A large number of Polish businesses and families reside and work around Broad Street and affectionately refer to the area as "Little Poland". The Polish community has been credited with revitalizing the area both culturally and economically. Visitors can find unique amber jewellery, handcrafted items, blown glass, Christmas ornaments, carved chess sets and a variety of Polish food.
The New Britain Museum of American Art was the first and currently the oldest art museum in the United States devoted to American Art. It contains a comprehensive art collection from the 18th century to the present and has tens of thousands of visitors each year. The Walnut Hill Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, is situated next to the museum. The New Britain Youth Museum, founded in 1956, encourages children and their families to learn Connecticut history and explore aspects of state and world cultures.
Other attractions in and around New Britain include the New Britain Industrial Museum, Walnut Hill Rose Gardens, New Britain Youth Museum, Hole in the Wall Theatre, the New Britain Industrial Museum, Copernican Observatory and Planetarium and Willow Brook Park Sports Complex. New Haven is also home to Yale University and the Yale Bulldogs athletic teams.
