New Canaan is a town in Fairfield County in the state of Connecticut. It is located 8 miles northeast of Stamford on the Five Mile River and 5 miles north-west of Norwalk on the south-western edge of the state.

Canaan Parish was established as a religious center in 1731 then officially incorporated as a town in 1801. New Canaan begun as an agricultural community until the Revolutionary War, where the major industry became shoe manufacturing. As the shoe business developed, early in the nineteenth century, regional settlements of clustered houses, mill, and schools developed into distinct district centres which still stand today. With the 1868 advent of the railroad, many of New York City's wealthy residents travelled to New Canaan to enjoy the quiet setting and subsequently built magnificent summer homes. Many of the summer visitors eventually settled permanently, commuting to their jobs in New York City and creating the residential community today is considered one of the most affluent communities in the United States.

New Canaan today benefits from easy access to the nearby cities and towns that it shares with the Stamford - Norwalk metropolitan area. The downtown area consists of many restaurants, an old movie theatre, and antique shops. There are also several churches in town, as well as the historic Roger Sherman Inn. Numerous structures around New Canaan are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. New Canaan has two Metro-North railroad stations: the New Canaan station and the Talmadge Hill station permitting residents an easy 1 hour journey via rail to New York City.

Other attractions in and around New Canaan include the Hampton Inn, Landis Gores House, Philip Johnson Glass House, New Canaan Nature Center, John Rogers Studio & Museum and the Maritime Aquarium. The New Canaan Nature Center is another popular destination. It is spread over 40 acres of land and includes an arboretum, a nature preserve and a botanical garden.
