New London is a seaport city and a port of entry in New London County in the state of Connecticut. It is located at the mouth of the Thames River in the south-eastern part of the state. New London Harbour is home port to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Chinook, the Coast Guard's tall ship Eagle and the United States Coast Guard Academy.

At the start of the 19th century, whaling brought the majority of wealth into the city. New London harbour was considered to be the best deep water harbour on Long Island Sound, and for several decades the city was the second busiest whaling port in the world after New Bedford, Massachusetts. New London became a base of American naval operations during the Revolutionary War with the main defensive fort being Fort Griswold, located across the Thames River in Groton.

New London boasts a glorious waterfront, a rich cultural scene, fascinating historic sites and fabulous recreational facilities. Historic streets are lined with 18th and 19th century buildings and are home to unique shops, restaurants and cultural attractions.

New London’s premier recreational facility is Ocean Beach Park. The park provides excellent public access to the sugar sand beach and Atlantic Ocean complimented by an Olympic-size freshwater swimming pool. Over 50-acres of parklands cater to the outdoor lover encompassing a beautifully landscaped 18-hole miniature golf course, Port ‘N Starboard Banquet and Conference facilities, Boardwalk Café Food Court and snack stands, a triple water slide, spray park, carousel and rides, Game Room, and Nature Walk with Bird Watching observation Deck. The Park also hosts a variety of family oriented entertainment, festivals, volleyball tournaments, sporting events, and nightly entertainment throughout the summer.

Hempstead Houses, the Shaw-Perkins Mansion and the Robert Mills U.S. Customs House, the nation’s oldest operating customs office where the ship Amistad was docked for over a year, offer a look back into the history of the maritime and colonial times that form the historic flavour of New London.
