Plainville is a town in Hartford County in the state of Connecticut. It is located 4 miles west of New Britain and 87 miles north-east of New York, New York. Plainville is part of the surrounding Hartford metropolitan area.

Historically, the area of Plainville was a part of Farmington and was known as the Great Plain. It was separated and incorporated as a town in 1869. It kept its name in part and is characterised by its level terrain. The people of Plainville worked mostly in the agriculture and the manufacturing of tin and japanned ware.

Plainville sits today on the west of two prominent peaks of the Metacomet Ridge: Pinnacle Rock and Bradley Mountain. The 51 mile Metacomet Trail traverses those peaks. Two major rail lines intersect in town. One runs from New Haven and the other runs from east to west between Waterbury and Berlin. Plainville has also been something of a minor transportation hub and is home to Robertson Airport, the oldest private airport in Connecticut.

Plainville is perhaps best known for its annual Hot Air Balloon Festival at the end of August at Norton Park. The Festival attracts thousands of spectators together to enjoy fun-filled nights of games, music, and fireworks. The event is sponsored by Plainville Fire Company, who claims the festival is one of the biggest and last remaining balloon festivals in the Northeast.

Plainville offers easy access to numerous historic sites and museums the Plainville Historic Center, New Britain Museum of American Art, Tomasso Nature Park, Old State House, Paderewski Pond, Olde Canal Square Plaza Shopping Center, Barnes Museum, Day-Lewis Museum, the New Britain Industrial Museum, the New Britain Museum of American Art and the New Britain Youth Museum. The town also has lakes and reservoirs that offer both water sports opportunities and a variety of recreational activities.
