Putnam is a town in Windham County in the state of Connecticut. It is located 24 miles south of Worcester, Massachusetts and 53 miles south-west of Boston, Massachusetts in the north-east corner of the state. The town is crossed by Interstate 395, U.S. Route 44, Connecticut Route 12, Connecticut Route 21 and Connecticut Route 171.
Putnam, originally known as Aspinock, then part of Killingly, is a New England mill town which was incorporated in 1855. The town was named in honour of Revolutionary War General Israel Putnam. Due to the towns numerous mills and trains that ran straight through the town, Putnam was a key contributor in providing clothing and other goods to the Civil War soldiers.
Old Towne Putnam features many galleries and boutiques and is home to two community theatres - the Bradley Playhouse, and The Black Box Theatre. The Black Box opened in 2007 with the desire to bring cutting edge, intimate theatre to the Downtown Putnam Community. This multidimensional space allows for constant change and reinvention and hosts dramas, comedies, musicals and dance. The Student Series is performed solely by the art house’s students.
Museums such as the Connecticut Eastern Railroad Museum, the Revolutionary War Office, and the Lebanon Historical Society Museum are popular with history buffs whilst the Putnam Plaza Shopping Center offers shopping opportunities. Woodstock Golf Course & Driving Range, Vineyard Valley Golf Club, and Harrisville Golf Course are also nearby golf clubs.
