Stamford is a city in Fairfield County in the state of Connecticut. It is located in the south-western part of the state close to the border. Stamford is the fourth largest city in the state and is in the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk Metro area, which is a part of the Greater New York metropolitan area.

New York residents originally built summer homes on the shoreline in Stamford in the late 19th century. Some moved permanently, commuting back to Manhattan by train. Stamford became incorporated as a city in 1893 and today boasts the motto "The City That Works!" It is an economically sound community which claims a high quality of life accompanied by a low crime rate.

Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens is a 91-acre botanical gardens and science education center boasting over 850 specimen trees and plants from around the world. It is also home to several Champion Trees; the largest of their species within Connecticut.

The Stamford Museum and Nature Center spread over 118-acres at the northern end of town and offers a collection of works by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, who once resided in Stamford. The Centre’s education programs are designed to inspire creativity, foster self-discovery, and nurture an appreciation for lifelong learning. The programs take place both on- and off-site and embrace the wonders and workings of art, nature, and agriculture, using many of the centres own resources, including the pond, farm, forests, planetarium, and art galleries. The Stamford Observatory also sits on the Museum grounds, was founded in 1936, and has been operating since 1965. The Observatory has a 22-inch telescope and is run by The Fairfield County Astronomical Society.

Cove Island Park, once a farm and then an enormous factory site, offers visitors a choice of beaches, picnic grounds and bluffs across 83 acres. A small wildlife sanctuary sits in the southwest corner and is popular with bird watchers. Terry Connors Ice Rink shares a parking lot with Cove Island Park and is the home of the Stamford Youth Hockey Association. The rink offers a range of skating opportunities including figure, hockey and social groups.
