Wallingford is a town in New Haven County in the state of Connecticut. It is located beside the Quinnipiac River 5 miles south of Meriden, about 13 miles north of New Haven and 78 miles north-east of New York, New York. Wallingford is part of the surrounding New Haven - Meriden metro area, and sits in the Hartford-New Haven corridor.
Wallingford was founded in October of 1667, when 38 planters and freemen were authorized by the Connecticut General Assembly to create a village on the east river. The area was incorporated in May of 1670. During the nineteenth century a considerable concentration of small pewter and Britannia ware manufacturers developed in Wallingford. Robert Wallace acquired the formula for nickel silver and established with Samuel Simpson, R. Wallace & Company which later became Wallace Silversmiths. Several smaller silver and Britannia plants were combined to form the International Silver Company, operating several of its plants in Wallingford.
High technology industries have settled in Wallingford over the past decade dedicated to medical fields, health care, service, hi-tech specialty metal manufacturing and research development. The development of several Industrial parks in the area has increased both the town’s population and economy. Some of these include the Barnes Industrial Park, Casimir Pulaski Industrial Park, Wharton Brook Industrial Park, and the South Turnpike Road area. The town produces its own electricity and maintains an electric company with rates well below the state's average.
A popular site for weddings, photographs, and town gatherings is the gazebo situated in the Johanna Manfreda Fishbein Park. The historic Railroad Station that sits adjacent to the park and the Hall Elton Building are excellent examples of Wallingford’s Second Empire architecture. The town’s original firehouse, donated by Robert Wallace, boasts a distinctive hose drying tower and today is occupied by offices. The town is lit by period lights and decorated with wrought iron benches of Victorian design, trees, plantings and unique brick walkways that grace the streetscape.
Other attractions in and around Wallingford include the Wharton Brook State Park, Quinnipiac River Linear Trail, Sleeping Giant State Park, Wallingford Country Club, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park and Powder Ridge.
