West Haven is a city in New Haven County in the state of Connecticut. It is located 65 miles north-east of New York, New York. It is in New Haven county. The city is part of the New Haven - Meriden metro area.

West Haven was originally settled in 1648 a part of the New Haven Colony, but separated in 1719 as the Parish of West Haven. After several mergers and separations, it finally achieved the status of a city in 1961.

West Haven is referred to as “Connecticut’s Friendliest City.” The beautiful shoreline offers a variety of water sports whilst a number of city parks and golf courses provide recreational opportunities. Downtown visitors can enjoy the culinary delights of a variety of restaurants and satisfy their shopping needs at many of the retail outlets.

West Haven and nearby attractions include Ward-Heitmann House Museum, Oyster River Beach, Yale University Art Gallery, Knights of Columbus Museum, Morse Park and Orange Hills Country Club. The Savin Rock section of West Haven was the original site of the Savin Rock Amusement Park, which ran from the late 19th century through until 1960s. One of the last reminders of the area is Jimmies of Savin Rock, a restaurant known for its seafood and split hot dogs.
