Westport is a coastal town located on Long Island Sound in Fairfield County in the state of Connecticut. It is located 3 miles north-east of Norwalk and 47 miles north of New York, New York. The town is also part of the Stamford - Norwalk metropolitan statistical area.

Westport began as an agricultural community when colonists settled along the Saugatuck River in 1639. Land was taken from Weston, Fairfield and Norwalk and the town of Westport was officially incorporated in 1835. The town was soon known as the leading onion growing center of the nation. This was aided by a developing shipping center through the 1830s and the arrival of a railroad in 1842.

Rolnick Observatory is an astronomical observatory in Westport. It was built upon the former BR-73 Nike missile site in the mid 1960s and is located at the highest elevation in the town. It is named after Gerry Rolnick, a co-founder of the Society and the engineer who ground the reflective mirror in the telescope. The Fred Bump Education Center is also located on site and holds Westport Astronomical Society meetings along with various continuing education classes.

Earthplace, The Nature Discovery Center, is natural history museum, nature center and wildlife sanctuary in Westport. Trails cross this 62-acre sanctuary, the largest open-space area in Westport, offering sightings of rabbits, chipmunks, deer, box turtles, wild turkeys, mink and wood frogs. Museum rooms feature interactive nature displays, hands-on activities, large wildlife dioramas, live insects, amphibians and reptiles, as well as nature exploration activities. The Native Plants Courtyard highlights plants native to south-western Connecticut and the Bird and Butterfly Garden has been accredited by the National Wildlife Federation as a certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat, providing food, shelter, and water and nesting sites for wildlife. The range of wildlife that can be viewed is extensive. Birds include hummingbirds, cedar waxwings, Robins, and cardinals. Butterflies include monarchs, Eastern tiger swallowtails, black swallowtails, skippers, and painted ladies. A large collection of rescued wildlife are exhibited including bald eagles, hawks, turkey vultures, black vultures, kestrels, owls, a black rat snake, and little brown bats.

Numerous shopping malls reside throughout the town and annual celebrations like the Fiesta Del Norte and the Yankee Doodle Fair are popular local attractions. Other Westport and nearby attractions include the Arts Center, Mid Fairfield Youth Museum, Compo Beach and the Westport Country Playhouse.
