Windsor is a town in Hartford County in the state of Connecticut. It is located 6 miles north of state capital Hartford and 88 miles south-west of Boston, Massachusetts. The town is conveniently located inside the Hartford metropolitan area.
Winsor has a rich history in Tobacco farming. In the 1630’s, the first European settlers came to the valley to find that the native population had already established growing Tobacco. Farmers grew tobacco for the two outside layers of cigars, the binder and the wrapper, and by 1700 were exporting their product to European ports via the Connecticut River. The use of Connecticut shade grown leaf as a cigar wrapper began in the 1820s and had very strong effect on the economics of the valley towns. Thousands of young people and millions of dollars flourished in Winsor and its surrounding areas. Adjustments to the methods and products and the general decline in cigar smoking has reduced the Connecticut Tobacco designated acreage from a high of 30,800 in 1921 to just 2000 acres today. The abandoned fields that once grew tobacco have now been used for housing, industrial parks and shopping centres.
The Connecticut Valley Tobacco Historical Society was formed in 1988 with the sole aim of preserving the artefacts and history of the cigar tobacco agriculture in the valley. Today the public can view all of this at the Connecticut Valley Tobacco Museum. The Museum consists of two main structures. The first is an existing tobacco curing barn filled with exhibits of early and modern growing equipment, and the second is a new facility exhibiting photographs, writings, and other historical documents.
Winsor town today blends modern facilities with its farming heritage. The Day Hill Road area is known as Windsor's Main Corporate Area although there are several other thriving industrial areas, such as the New England Tradeport, Kennedy Industry Park and the Addison Road Industrial Park.
Along the shores of the Connecticut River runs the Windsor Meadows State Park. Along with several other town parks, this beautiful open space park provides residents and visitors with recreational activities ranging from sports, playgrounds and tennis courts to public swimming pools and ponds. Kayaking and canoeing is also a popular pastime on the Farmington River. Other attractions in and around Winsor include the Broad Street Green Historic District, Farmington River Railroad Bridge, Strawberry Hills Park, Tradition Golf Club and the Huntington House Museum.
