Bear is a census-designated place in New Castle County in the state of Delaware. It is located about 13 miles from Wilmington in the northern part of the state.

Bear began as a small crossroad in a rural area south of Wilmington. Local residents farmed small areas growing mainly corn and cattle. The 1980s and 1990s brought a shopping center along US Route 40. This combined with Delaware’s increasing housing developments made Bear a popular place to live in and often commute from. Today Bear is a general reference to the collection of communities in the US ZIP codes 19701-19702. Folklore claims that the name derived from a tavern located along the roadway from Wilmington to Dover, Delaware whose sign was decorated with the image of a large bear.

Residents of Bear benefit from close proximity to larger towns and cities. Education is catered to by three public school districts and numerous private schools.

Delaware State Parks are known for having exceptional trails, ponds, beaches, forests and fields. Visitors can enjoy staying in romantic resort cottages and visiting historical sites such as the Mt. This collection reflects the diverse local cultures, people and heritage of Delaware and displays over 120 works from about 50 artists. The Brandywine Zoo is the only zoo in the state of Delaware and is located a few steps from the Brandywine River. The 12-acre zoo features a Siberian tiger, river otters, and other animals native to the Americas and the temperate areas of Asia.
