Milford is a city in Kent and Sussex counties in the state of Delaware. It is located 45 miles south-west of Vineland, New Jersey and 69 miles south-east of Baltimore, Maryland. The Kent County portion of Milford is part of the Dover Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the Sussex County portion is part of the Seaford Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Milford on the Kent County side of the border was originally settled in the year 1680 by Henry Bowan. The area at this time was known as Saw Mill Range. 100 years later Milford was established with the building of a new dam across the Mispillion River, the layout of town streets and the development of various homes and businesses. The city of Milford was incorporated in the year 1807.

The ship building industry flourished on the Mispillion River and became the major industry of Milford through World War I. Shipyards closed in 1920 once the last of the area’s giant white oaks was cut down. Submarine chasers were built on the Vineyard shipyard during both World War I and II. Today Milford’s historic downtown is finding a new role as the center of community life. Many of the retail outlets and businesses have located outside the downtown area.

Milford lays on a variety of educational and recreational activities for visitors. The Milford Museum is housed in a former post office building. The permanent exhibits the city development from its earliest beginnings on the Mispillion River to today. Exhibits include a 300 piece silver collection of coins, spoons, and novelties along with displays depicting the early settlement of Milford, a variety of architecture, prominent citizens, artefacts, photographs, model ships and historical memorabilia. Other attractions in and around Milford include the Milford Plaza, Killens Pond State Park, Cape Henlopen State Park, the Delaware Archaeology Museum and the Biggs Museum of American Art. Festivals include the Riverwalk Festival and the Bug and Bud Festival which are hosted by the city of Milford annually.
