Newark is a city in New Castle County in the state of Delaware. It is located 12 miles west-southwest of Wilmington and 44 miles southwest of Philadelphia in the northern part of the state.
Scottish, Irish and Welsh settlers originally founded Newark in 1694. It was incorporated as a city in 1951. Three signers of the Declaration of Independence: George Read, Thomas McKean, and James Smith, were educated in the area at the Newark Academy. This grammar school, founded by Francis Alison in 1743, moved from New London, Pennsylvania to Newark in 1765 and marked the beginning of the significant role schools have played in Newark’s history. Newark Academy and Newark College joined together in 1834, becoming Delaware College. The school was closed in 1859 and reopened in1870 as a joint venture between the State of Delaware and the school's Board of Trustees. In 1921 the school was renamed the University of Delaware. Today the school is probably best known for its business, chemical engineering, chemistry and biochemistry programs, drawing from the historically strong presence of the nation's chemical and pharmaceutical industries in the state of Delaware. The University of Delaware offers 23 varsity sports, which compete in the NCAA Division-I. Newark is a recognized center of American and international figure skating. Many national, world, and Olympic champions have trained at the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club and at The Pond Ice Rink.
Over 12,000 acres of public parkland surrounds the city including Iron Hill Park, Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area, White Clay Creek State Park, White Clay Creek Preserve and the Middle Run Valley Natural Area. These parks offer outstanding recreational opportunities for hiking, mountain bikers and horseback riders.
Attractions in Newark include historic sites such as Cooch’s Bridge (site of the only battle of the American Revolutionary War fought on Delaware soil, and also the site of the first battle in which the Stars and Stripes were flown), the Hale-Byrnes House, Delaware History Center and Rockwood Museum. Winterfest brings Main Street alive with the sights and sounds of the holiday celebrations including carolling, roasted chestnuts, carriage rides, window decorating, and ice carving.
