Wilmington is a city in and county seat of New Castle County in the state of Delaware. It is the largest city in the state and is located at the confluence of the Christina River and Brandywine Creek, near where the Christina flows into the Delaware River. Wilmington is 24 miles south-west of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is part of the Wilmington - Newark metropolitan statistical area.

Settlers from Sweden originally colonized the Wilmington area in 1638. Ownership of the land transferred to the Dutch who renamed the area Altena. In 1664 the area came under the British rule and in 1739 the name was changed once more, to Wilmington. It is named after Spencer Compton, the Earl of Wilmington, who was prime minister in the reign of George II of Great Britain.

Wilmington diverse ethnic population contributes to several very popular festivals. The most popular is the Italian Festival which is run by St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. The city closes down six blocks in the west side on the second week of June every year for traditional Italian music, food, and activities, along with carnival rides and games. The Greek Festival, which is organized by Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, is on a smaller scale and features traditional Greek crafts, food, drink, and music. Other annual festivals in Wilmington include the Polish, India Fest , Haneef's African Festival and Big August Quarterly. Music festivals in Wilmington include the week long Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, the Bob Marley tribute Peoples' Festival and the Riverfront Blues Festival.

The Wilmington State Parks are a group of four parks in Wilmington operated by the Delaware State Park system. The four parks are Brandywine Park, Alapocas Woods Natural Area, H. Fletcher Brown Park and Rockford Park. Admission to the parks is free, but a fee is charged for admittance to the zoo. The parks are located within minutes of each other and admission is free.

Other Wilmington attractions include The Blue Ball Barn, built in 1914 by Alfred I. Du Pont. Situated in the Alapocas Run State Park, this multifunctional conference and gallery space includes meeting rooms, a large banquet room and a secluded courtyard for intimate gatherings. The Barn is home to the Delaware Folk Art Collection. This collection reflects the diverse local cultures, people and heritage of Delaware and displays over 120 works from about 50 artists. The Brandywine Zoo is the only zoo in the state of Delaware and is located a few steps from the Brandywine River. The 12-acre zoo features a Siberian tiger, river otters, and other animals native to the Americas and the temperate areas of Asia.

Other notable tourist attractions include the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Arden Craft Shop Museum, Business History & Technology Museum, the Historical Society of Delaware and the Brandywine Shopping Center.
