Boca Raton is a city in Palm Beach County in the state of Florida. It is located about 20 miles north of Fort Lauderdale, 30 miles south of Palm Beach and about 50 miles north of Miami.
The literal translation of the Spanish words Boca Raton are Rat's Mouth, but local folklore claims the name is more likely derived from the colloquial translation being “Thieves Inlet.” This would relate to a nearby geographical inlet in the Biscayne Bay area.
Japanese farmers grew pineapple plantations at the beginning of the 1900’s. Army Air Corps took over the majority of their land in 1942, establishing the only war-time radar training school in the area, and bringing in tens of thousands of servicemen and their families. Boca Raton was known through the 1930s and 40s for its winter vegetable crops, particularly green beans. The 1950’s and 60’s brought with it two innovative amusement parks and the arrival of one of IBM‘s computer facilities. These factors resulted in a population spurt and the development of the very first IBM PC in 1981. The industrial base is still increasing today and Boca Raton has become a major hub of innovative computer development.
Attractions in the city are wide and varied. The Japanese heritage of the Yamato Colony is preserved at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens northwest of the city. The downtown Mizner Park is an outdoor shopping, dining and cultural center for southern Palm Beach County. The Park resembles a Mediterranean suburban town center with a more contemporary look. It is home to the Boca Raton Museum of Art and to the large-capacity outdoor 'Mizner Park Amphitheatre' where concerts and other performances are held.
The Children’s Museum of Boca Raton is an interactive educational institution offering exhibits, an outreach program, a television program, and several annual family events. Each exhibit and program in the museum is developed to engage children in interactive, imaginative free-play. The museum is located in downtown Memorial Park on a campus made up of several historic buildings. Other attractions in Boca Raton include the Caldwell Theatre Company, the eastern beaches and Red Reef Park, Gumbo Limbo and Sugar Sand Park. Annual events in Boca Raton include the Meet Me Downtown Festival and the Boca Raton Holiday Boat Parade.
