Brandon is a census-designated place in Hillsborough County in the state of Florida. It is located 10 miles east of Tampa, near Florida's Gulf Coast and is currently the largest unincorporated community in the state of Florida.
John Brandon, his wife Martha and their six sons arrived at Fort Brooke (now Tampa) from Mississippi in 1857. Within the year he had purchased 40 acres of local land and another 160 acres in later years. He named his land Brandon. After Martha’s passing, John married Victoria, who went on to become a prominent figure in the history of the area.
The Florida Central and Peninsula Railroad came through the area in 1890 and Victoria convinced a railroad civil engineer to survey the area and lay out a town site. 40 acres was designated and mapped out and Victoria gave the new town the name Brandon. Stowers Funeral Home is a famous landmark in Brandon and was built by one of John Brandon's son James. Growth in Brandon since then has happened in spurts. Although the population plateaued through World War II, the town maintained living standards from the food they raised on their farms. The real growth period for Brandon began in the 1950’s. The Hopewell Road was connected to Adamo Drive making the drive to Tampa easier, thus turning Brandon into a bedroom community. By the early 1960s, Brandon's population topped 8,000 in the early 1960’s with the estimation that one new family moved into town every day.
Today Brandon is Tampa's premier bedroom community boasting small town living with easy access to the big city. Brandon was the birthplace of Beef O'Brady's, a family-oriented bar and grill chain restaurant prevalent throughout the South-eastern United States. Westfield Shoppingtown is a massive modern shopping facility that claims to be the Tampa area's premier shopping destination.
Brandon's most notable annual event is the Brandon Balloon Classic Two days each April are celebrated and features over 50 hot air balloons from all over the country. Tampa is only a few minutes’ drive away and attractions here include the Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, the Florida International Museum, the Florida Aquarium, Florida Holocaust Museum, Museum of Science and Industry and the Tampa Museum of Art. The city of Orlando is only about a 90 minutes drive away from Brandon and attracts visitors with amazing parks such as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World Florida.
