Cape Coral is a large municipality in Lee County in the state of Florida. It is located twenty minutes southwest of Fort Myers and twenty minutes north of Fort Myers Beach and has easy access to highways including Interstate 75, Florida 80, Florida 739, and Florida 884. The city lies between the Caloosahatchee River and the Gulf of Mexico. It is a principal city in the Cape Coral – Fort Myers Metropolitan Statistical Area and is the second largest city in Florida by area.
Leonard and Jack Rosen purchased a 103-square-mile tract known as Redfish Point in 1957. In 1958 they began development of the city with over 400 miles of navigable waterways. The Gulf American Corporation was formed to develop this “Waterfront Wonderland” with the first building was the Rosens' company headquarters and the first permanent resident the Rosens' general manager, Kenny Schwartz. Development continued through the early 1960s and by 1963 the population was 2,850 and there was over 80 miles of road, 160 miles of canals, 1300 buildings, a yacht club, a golf course, medical clinic, and a shopping center. The city incorporated in August 1970, and its population continued to grow rapidly. A great number of young families and professionals were drawn to the area during the 1990’s population and construction boom.
Because Cape Coral has more miles of canals than any other city on earth, many of its tourist attractions are based in and around water. Some of these are swimming, boating, fishing, the Annual Aquatic Festival, and the annual Synchronized Swim Show. Other places of interest include the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, Cape Coral Art League, Cape Coral Arts Studio, Cape Coral Historical Museum, Cultural Park Theatre, nine golf courses and more than 30 parks.
Wildlife is plentiful on the Cape. Rotary Park is home to wading birds, raptors, butterflies, foxes and other wildlife. Nature enthusiasts can track exotic birds and native fish from the boardwalk at Lake Kennedy and West Indian Manatees can be viewed at Sirenia Vista Park. Cape Coral is also home to the largest population of Burrowing Owls in Florida. In 2009 the apex predator Nile Monitor was discovered in Cape Coral. Although these iguanas are found throughout southern Florida and generally do not pose a threat, the Nile Monitor grows up to 9 feet, is a fast travelling and fast swimming carnivore that ‘s diet can include fowl, cats and dogs.
