Davie is a town in Broward County in the state of Florida. It is located 9 miles southwest of Fort Lauderdale and about 25 miles north of Miami. Davie is bordered by the Florida Everglades to the west and is only a few minutes’ drive away from the Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. It is also part of the South Florida metropolitan area.
Davie was originally founded by a group of workers from the Panama Canal Zone. Because of this the town was named Zona. The town was renamed "Davie" when developer Randolph P. Davie bought about 27,000 acres in the area. Today Davie preserves its reputation as a "Western" town through town aesthetics and cultural and recreational facilities.
The Bergeron Rodeo Grounds are located in the historical western-themed district of downtown Davie and have long served as the most popular tourist attraction in Davie. Originally established as a rodeo arena, this indoor/outdoor facility hosts top name concert entertainers, circuses, monster trucks, horse shows, dog shows, car shows, air boat shows, and industrial shows. Davie has been a stop on the Pro Rodeo Circuit for over 220 Rodeos in the last 23 years.
The Flamingo Gardens is a 60-acre wildlife sanctuary, aviary, and botanical gardens situated on South Flamingo Road. The grounds contain more than 3,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants, including 200-year-old oaks and more than 300 species of palms. Flora includes Pink Trumpet Tree, Yellow Poinciana, Dynamite Tree, Indian Jujube, Bread Nut Tree, Wampi and White Sapote among others with under storey plantings and a waterfall. Fauna include Otters, Alligators, Bobcats, Florida Panthers, Tortoises, fresh water turtles, Geese, Swans, Sandhill Cranes, blue-beaked ducks, Flamingos, Bald Eagles, golden eagles, owls, peacocks, macaws, and iguanas. The 25,000 square foot Everglades aviary houses one of the largest collection of wading birds in the United States and exhibits five ecosystems; Coastal prairie, mangrove swamp, cypress forest, sub-tropical hardwood hammock, and sawgrass prairie.
Davie is also known for its wonderful festivals and annual events. The Orange Blossom Festival, Parade and Rodeo covers two days each February and includes a heritage parade, an arts and crafts fair, a fine arts show, an antique stage coach and wagon display, a livestock fair, a cook-off, a country barbecue, live country entertainment, and continuous professional rodeo. In April the Diversity Festival offers a multitude of food samplings from around the world and the Fourth-of-July Independence Day Family Splash, Crafts and Fireworks includes family entertainment and a huge fireworks show. Toward the end of the year Davieween Happenings celebrates Halloween at Pine Island Park with costume contests for both humans and horses. November brings the Holiday Craft Fair and Green Market and in December, Davie hosts the Winter Holiday Lighting of the Greens and Snow Play.
