Daytona Beach is a city in Volusia County in the state of Florida. It is located on the eastern coast of central Florida about 55 miles northeast of Orlando, 90 miles south of Jacksonville and 90 miles north of Melbourne. Daytona Beach is also the principal city of the Deltona – Daytona Beach – Ormond Beach, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Mathias Day Junior purchased more than 2000 acres on the west bank of the tidal channel known as the Halifax River in 1871. In 1874 he built the areas first hotel, The Palmetto House. Entrepreneurs and businessmen soon settled here, taking advantage of the area's popularity as a vacation spot and in 1876 the city was incorporated and named Daytona. The separate towns of Daytona, Daytona Beach and Seabreeze merged as "Daytona Beach" in 1926, and the city was dubbed “The World's Most Famous Beach". On March 8, 1936, the first stock car race was held on the Daytona Beach Road Course. In 1959, William France created NASCAR and the Daytona International Speedway to replace the existing beach course, forcing a giant leap forward for Motor Sports.
Today Dayton Beach attracts approximately 8 million visitors each year. Other than beach goers and motor sport enthusiasts, visitors are attracted to the area by high quality performing arts and theatre, nationally renowned museums and educational institutes and outdoor oceanfront concerts featuring jazz, Dixieland, folk, big band and rhythm and blues. The city has a long reputation as the nation's #1 Spring Break destination.
The Museum of Arts and Sciences is a collection of museums and galleries including the Klancke Environmental Complex, the Cuban Museum, Root Family Museum, the Dow American Gallery and the Bouchelle Center for Decorative Arts. The Museum, often referred to as the MOAS, is the primary cultural facility for Daytona Beach and Volusia County.
The Southeast Museum of Photography is located on the campus of Daytona State College in the Mori Hosseini Center. More than 3,500 photographs are on permanent display and includes work by William Klein, Sally Mann, Harry Callahan, Gordon Parks, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Paul Strand, Aaron Siskind and Robert Rauschenberg .
Daytona Beach is within reasonable driving distance of several world-class attractions. Some of these are the Kennedy Space Center, Universal Studios, Sea World Florida and Walt Disney World. The city is home to the Daytona Cubs, the Ladies Professional Golf Association, NASCAR, the NBA Basketball Orlando Magic , the NFL Football Jacksonville Jaguars and the Arena Football Orlando Predators.
