Delray Beach is a city in Palm Beach County in the state of Florida. It is located in the southern end of the County, about 9 miles north of Boca Raton, 30 miles north of Fort Lauderdale and 60 miles north of Miami.
The area now known as Delray Beach was originally developed by a small group of Michigan settlers in the late 19th century. Early economy was dominated by agriculture. In the 20th century the town evolved from a farming community into a bustling city. A large scale renovation during recent years has had an enormous impact on the city. Florida’s historic preservation movement has given the downtown area a refreshed aesthetic enabling Delray Beach to be recognized as an All-America City in both 1993 and 2001, the only Florida city to ever win the designation twice.
The Delray Beach International Tennis Championships is an ATP World Tour 250 series men's tennis tournament that moved from Coral Springs in 1999 to Delray Beach. The event is played on hard courts and has become a key tourist attraction for the city. Delray Beach is renamed Tennis Beach for one week each year in honour of its nomination by the United States Tennis Association as one of the top tennis towns in the United States. The Delray Beach Tennis Center is home to many major international tennis events during the year including the Davis Cup, Fed Cup, and Chris Evert/Bank of America Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic.
Delray Beach hosts several festivals throughout the year adding colour, excitement and jubilation to the city. The Delray Affair, held in the Downtown Delray Arts District, exhibits arts and crafts, celebrates the creative and lasts for three days. The Delray Beach Garlic Fest also lasts three days and combines music, food, and art on the grounds of Old School Square. Art & Jazz on the Avenue is held six times a year and the Gallery Walk is an evening of art, music and refreshments and is held each Friday night among downtown galleries, art studios, and showrooms.
Other attractions in and around the city include the Deerfield Beach Arboretum, the Caldwell Theatre Company in Boca Raton, the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum in Palm Beach, and the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach. Miami is about a 60 minute drive away and offers the Gold Coast Railroad Museum, the Miami Metro Zoo, the Miami Seaquarium, the Bass Museum of Art and the Jackie Gleason Theatre of the Performing Arts.
