Fort Lauderdale is a city in Broward County in the state of Florida. It is located on the Atlantic coast north of Hollywood and south of Pompano Beach. It is also a principal city of the South Florida metropolitan area.
Fort Lauderdale is named after a series of forts built during the Second Seminole War and named for Major William Lauderdale, who was the commander of the detachment of soldiers who built the first fort. The area previously known as the "New River Settlement" was officially incorporated as Fort Lauderdale in 1911. In 1915 it was designated as the county seat of newly formed Broward County.
Today Fort Lauderdale sits adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean and is one of the nation's largest tourist destinations. Great resources support this major yachting center with over 100 marinas and boatyards and tens of thousands of resident owned yachts. Fort Lauderdale’s warm climate and world famous coastline allows endless opportunities for recreation, relaxation and enjoyment. Boating, wind surfing, jet skiing; volleyball, snorkelling, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing and rollerblading are all very popular. For less strenuous activities, the beachfront promenade includes an array of shops, restaurants, sidewalk cafes and entertainment venues. Fort Lauderdale is also a favourite spot for college students during spring break.
Fort Lauderdale is home to the Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop, a large indoor/outdoor flea market and the site of the world's largest drive-in movie theatre, with 13 screens. The International Swimming Hall of Fame houses a large aquatic complex as well as a museum, theatre, and research library and is situated on Fort Lauderdale beach. A plethora of restaurants and nightclubs reside in the city as do public recreational spaces and Parks. The Hugh Taylor Birch State Park covers 180 acres along the beach and includes nature trails, camping and picnicking areas, canoeing, and the Terramar Visitor Center.
