Fort Myers is a city in and the county seat of Lee County in the state of Florida. It is located at the convergence of the Caloosahatchee River and the Gulf of Mexico on the southern west coast of Florida. Fort Myers and Cape Coral are the two major cities that make up the Cape Coral-Fort Myers Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Fort Myers was built in 1850 as a military fort and named after Colonel Abraham C. Myers, who was the son-in-law of the fort's founder and commander. The Fort was used by Federal soldiers once more during the Civil War. 1882 brought a significantly increase in population due to the arrival of a vast amount of settlers. Fort Myers was established officially in 1886 and became the historical and governmental hub of Lee County. In 1924 the Tamiami Trail Bridge was constructed, allowing unproblematic crossing of the Caloosahatchee River and once again creating a surge in population.

Today Fort Myers is recognized as the gateway to the popular tourist area located in the Southwest portion of the state of Florida. It is the address of the winter homes of Thomas Edison (Seminole Lodge) and Henry Ford (The Mangoes) and to the City of Palms Park, location of spring training of the Boston Red Sox. It is also home to the Gulf Coast League Red Sox. The Fort Myers area is well known for its beautiful beaches, resort hotels, shopping and fishing opportunities and a vast amount of quality golf courses.

The Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium is a private environmental education organization set on a 105-acre site. It includes a museum, three nature trails, a planetarium, butterfly and bird aviaries, a gift shop, meeting and picnic areas and is a major tourist attraction in the city. Other attractions in and around Fort Myers include the Historic Downtown and waterfront entertainment district, the Fort Myers Art Walk, Florida Gulf Coast University and the Sanibel Lighthouse.
