Gainesville is a city in and the county seat of Alachua County in the state of Florida. It is located 37 miles north of Ocala, 71 miles southwest of Jacksonville, and 114 miles northwest of Orlando. Gainesville is the county's largest city.
Gainesville was officially incorporated in 186 and named in honour of General Edmund Pendleton Gaines, a commander in the Second Seminole War. The city prospered during the latter part of the 19th century mainly through its citrus and phosphate industries. The start of the 20th century brought the boll weevil and its subsequent crop devastation and the construction of the University of Florida. Over the past century, the University of Florida has brought the area a youthful population, cultural diversity and world-class medical facilities. The University is Florida's principal state university and the fourth-largest university in the nation.
A great number of areas and buildings have been added to the National Register of Historic Places in recent years. The Northeast and Southeast Gainesville Residential Districts are home to dozens of restored Victorian and Queen Anne style residences dating back to the 1880s and 1890s. Other historic structures in and around downtown include the Bailey Plantation House, Matheson Center Home, Thomas Hotel, Masonic Temple, Seagle Building and Epworth Hall.
Gainesville offers striking natural features, rich wildlife, excellent dining, rich cultural environment and an historic downtown. Residents enjoy nationally recognized heath care facilities, reasonably priced, high-quality housing in all price ranges, city-owned public transportation system and no state income tax. In April 2003, Gainesville was awarded the “Gold Well City” by the Wellness Councils of America, labelling it the healthiest community in the United States.
The city prides itself on having one of the best public school systems in the state including seven recreational centres for after-school activities. It is home to the University of Florida, Santa Fe College and City College. Thirty city parks and sixty miles of roadway with bike lanes enable outdoor recreation to be part of the Gainesville healthy lifestyle. Athletic fields, hiking and bike trails, tennis and racquetball courts, and swimming pools are open year-round throughout the city.
Cultural facilities in Gainesville include the Florida Museum of Natural History, the Thomas Center, the Hippodrome State Theatre, the Harn Museum of Art, the Curtis M. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, the Olustee Battlefield State Historic Site, the Civic Media Center, the Acrosstown Repertory Theatre and the Gainesville Community Playhouse.
