Hialeah is a city in Miami-Dade County in the state of Florida. It is located upon a large prairie between Biscayne Bay and the Everglades twenty minutes northwest of Miami, twenty five minutes northwest of Miami Beach, and twenty five minutes north of Coral Gable. It is part of both the Miami metropolitan area as well as the Greater South Florida metropolitan area.

The name Hialeah comes directly from the Indian word meaning "High Prairie". Since its incorporation in 1925, many historical events and people have been connected with Hialeah, the first of these being the opening of the Hialeah Park Race Track in 1925. Nicknamed the "Grand Dame", this 220 acre horse track park has been home to numerous horse races and is arguably one of the grandest American thoroughbred horses racing parks. The facility illustrates magnificent Mediterranean styled architecture and was considered the Jewel of Hialeah upon its opening. The Hialeah Park Race Track is also home of the Audubon Bird Sanctuary and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today the City of Hialeah is the commercial center for Miami-Dade County. National retailers such as Starbucks, Target, Wal-Mart, Lowe's and The Home Depot reside here alongside a large number of successful and competitive mom and pop stores. The manufacturing and cloth industry that made Hialeah an industrial city in the 1970s-1980s has decreased dramatically in recent years, only to be replaced by new electronics and technology businesses. Hialeah has the second highest percentage of Cuban and Cuban American residents of any city in America and is the headquarters of Telemundo, the second largest Spanish language TV network in the United States.

Parks and cultural resources in Hialeah include the Amelia Earhart Park (from where she departed on her ill-fated trip), Don Shula's Hotel & Golf Club, Milander Auditorium and Park, Triangle Park and the GableStage in Coral Gables.
