Palm Harbour is an unincorporated community in Pinellas County in the state of Florida. It is located on Florida's Gulf Coast, about 23 miles northwest of Tampa and 25 miles north of St. Petersburg.
Palm Harbour was originally settled in 1877 by J.C. Craver. The Southern Land and Development Company formed the initial community in 1888 and bestowed the name Sutherland. The economy of the area was based mostly in citrus farming and in 1925 the community's name was switched to Palm Harbour.
Today Palm Harbour is largely a residential community containing several concentrations of commerce. The downtown area of Palm Harbour hosts many small shops and eateries along with a handful of historic buildings. It is a regular site for numerous festivals and craft fairs. Just 2 miles south of Downtown higher concentrations of commerce can be found along with an array of national chain restaurants and retailers.
The North Pinellas Historical Museum was built as a residence in 1915 by one of the area’s first settlers, Judge Thomas William Hartley. Preserved beautifully today, the museum has a variety of exhibits that illustrate the history of Palm Harbour and surrounding communities, allowing visitors an insight to the period comprising first settlement in the 1800s up to the present day.
Due to its incredible location on the west coast, Palm Harbour has direct access to the Gulf of Mexico and offers quality facilities for fishing, boating, and diving. The Pinellas Trail is a very popular location for jogging, biking, strolling, and other forms of outdoor activities. The Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club is a nationally-regarded golf course with one entrance found in Palm Harbour on the U.S. Highway 19. The city also has public parks for barbecues and picnics, as well as fields for baseball, softball, and soccer.
Attractions in and around the Tampa Bay area include Adventure Island, Busch Gardens, The Florida Aquarium, Gulf Coast Museum of Art, Florida Museum of Natural History, Florida International Museum, Lowry Park Zoo, Salvador Dali Museum and the Florida Botanical Gardens.
