St. Petersburg is a city in Pinellas County in the state of Florida. It is located on a peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico and is connected to mainland Florida to the north, to the city of Tampa on its east by causeways and bridges and to Bradenton in the south by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. St. Petersburg is also part of the Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan statistical area.
John C. Williams purchased the land now known as St. Petersburg in 1876 and along with Peter Demens founded the city. It was incorporated on February 29, 1892 and named after the city in Russia where Peter Demens had spent half of his youth. The area has been long known as a vacation destination for both American and foreign tourists and today is commonly referred to by locals as "St. Pete.” Its nickname "The Sunshine City" is due to the purported average of 360 days of sunshine each year and hence has long been a popular retirement destination, however, recent years have shifted the population in a more youthful direction.
The downtown area experienced great development since the mid 1990s and now includes The Mahaffey Theatre complex, American Stage, The Coliseum, and Palladium Theatre, The Midtown Royal Theatre, The Arts Center and the Florida Craftsmen Gallery. The St. Petersburg Pier is arguably the city’s greatest attraction. The Pier opened in 1973 and has become a centrepiece of St. Petersburg’s downtown waterfront providing five stories of retail shopping, both casual and fine dining, a small aquarium and a variety of outdoor water and land adventures. Although the Pier has undergone many changes over the years, it has always maintained its function as a downtown anchor and amenity for local residents. The inverted pyramid pier that stands today has become a landmark in itself. The Pier is open 365 days a year and holds over 300 activities annually including community dances, star gazing and ongoing opportunities to fish and feed the pelicans.
Other attractions in and around the city include the Baywalk, The Dr. Carter G Woodson African-American Museum, The Florida Holocaust Museum, The Florida International Museum, Great Explorations, The Children's Museum, The Sunken Gardens, The Mahaffey Theatre, The Palladium Theatre, The St. Petersburg Little Theatre, The Ted Williams Baseball Museum and Tropicana Field and the Salvador Dalí Museum.
The city hosts more than 1,000 annual events and festivals including American Stage in the Park, the Art Arbor Nature Crafts Festival, the Cajun/Zydeco Crawfish Festival and Earth Day’s Green Thumb Festival. The city is also home to the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, an Indycar series car race.
