Tampa is a city in and the county seat for Hillsborough County in the state of Florida. It is located on the west coast of Florida and is part of the metropolitan area most commonly referred to as the Tampa Bay Area.

The land which is now named Tampa was originally inhabited by various indigenous cultures, most recently the Tocobaga. It was not until the US Army established a frontier outpost called Fort Brooke in 1824 that a small group of European pioneers developed a small settlement close by the fort and named it Tampa. In the language of the Native American tribe Calusa, the word "Tampa" is loosely translated into "sticks of fire ". Many believe this is a reference to the abundance of lightning strikes that the area receives in its summer months.

Today the city is a bustling metropolitan based in a rich and diverse multi-cultural population. Tampa has more than a dozen buildings that rise over 250 feet high, and with about 70 other high-rises has more than any other city in Florida after Miami. The North Tampa building, which raises 42 floors and 579 feet in Downtown Tampa, is the tallest building in Florida outside of Miami and Jacksonville.

Tampa’s ocean side location permits a great number of beach and water based activities. Beautiful white sand beaches line the coast and the ocean is a hub of activity with many visitors and residents enjoying jet skiing, parasailing, sport fishing, and boating.

A great number of excellent museums are located in Tampa including the Pioneer Florida Museum, the St. Petersburg Museum of History, the gulf Coast World of Science, the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins, the Boatyard Village, the Salvador Dali Museum, and the Children’s Museum of Tampa.

Tampa is home to four major professional teams. They are Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Devil Rays, National Football League’s Tampa Bay Bucaneers, National Hockey League’s Tampa Bay Lightning and Arena Football League’s Tampa Bay Storm.

Other attractions in and around Tampa include the Waterside cafes, Busch Gardens, Ybor City, Florida Aquarium, Channelside shopping, Adventure Island, Gorilla Theatre in Drew Park, African Art Gallery and the Gasparilla Pirate Festival.
