Albany is a city in and the county seat of Dougherty County in the state of Georgia. It is located along the banks of the Flint River in the south-western part of the state and is the principal city of the Albany, Georgia metropolitan area.

The land which is now known as Albany was originally inhabited by the Creek Indians and named “flint” in their language after the mineral flint that was found near the river. In 1836 a Connecticut Businessman named Nelson Tift settled beside the river and renamed it after New York's state capital. The town was laid out in 1836 by Alexander Shotwell and incorporated as a city in 1838.

The surrounding area was a prosperous farming region producing large amounts of cotton. Albany‘s location on the river made it an ideal base for transportation by steamboats and in later years it became a railroad hub. The Thronateeska Heritage Center exhibits some of the original trains and memorabilia of this era.

Today Albany is the commercial center for southwest Georgia with primary employers being the health care industry, education and the Marine Corps Logistics Base. The city provides great opportunities for fishing and boating on Lake Chehaw and recreational and sporting activities across many city parks, play areas and golf courses.

The Flint RiverQuarium is a 54,000 sq ft aquarium that is located on the banks of the Flint River. The aquarium follows the journey of the Flint River and features both freshwater and saltwater river ecosystem of Southwest Georgia. Other features include the Blue Hole Spring, Flint River Gallery, Discovery Caverns , World of Water shows, Spring Run Alligator Creek, Cypress Pond Aviary and the Imagination Theatre.
