Athens is a unified city-county in the state of Georgia. It is located about 1 hours drive east of Atlanta in the north-eastern part of the state and is the principal city of the Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The story of Athens begins in the 1700s where it was a trading settlement on the banks of the Oconee River originally known as Cedar Shoals. In 1785 the University of Georgia became the first state-supported university and in 1801 log structures were built on a hill above the settlement. 633 acres of local land was bought by trustee and later governor of Georgia, John Milledge. Milledge donated the land to the university and named the surrounding area Athens after the city that was home to the academy of Plato and Aristotle in Greece. The University was completed in 1806 and named in honour of Benjamin Franklin. Franklin College was the University of Georgia and the City of Athens' first permanent structure. Athens officially became a town in 1806 and grew as an industrial and commercial development strongly supported by its Cotton Mills. In 1991 the original city abandoned its charter and formed a unified government with Clarke County, referred to collectively as Athens-Clarke County.

Today much of the city's economy and culture is based on the university. The high number of students is catered to by excellent educational facilities, affordable diners, coffee houses, bars, clubs and a bustling nightlife. Athens has a strong bicycle culture and each spring hosts a series of bicycle races called the Twilight Series. Cyclists represent teams from all over the nation and the world and race around historic downtown Athens.

The art and cultural options in Athens are endless and the thriving music scene has produced legendary bands like the B-52's and REM. AthFest presents more than a hundred bands on various stages over a weekend each June. Atlanta Motor Speedway is one of the largest and oldest in the country and hosts two NASCAR Busch and Nextel Cup races each year.

Oconee Forest Park offers 60 acres of scenic beauty whilst Sandy Creek Park provides 782 acres of recreational areas and a 260-acre lake. These are popular getaway spots for recreational swimming, boating, fishing, camping, mountain biking and hiking. Other attractions in and around Athens include the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, the Georgia Art Museum, the 80,000-seat Sanford Stadium and the 71,000-seat Georgia Dome
