Augusta is a city in the state of Georgia. It is located on the border with South Carolina in the east-central part of the state. The city sits along the banks of the Savannah River, about 150 miles east of Atlanta and is the principal city of the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is also more recently known as Augusta–Richmond County since the city and county merged operations in 1996.

Augusta was originally established by British General James E. Oglethorpe in 1736 and was named in honour of Augusta, Princess of Wales. The city was a pivotal site during both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and served as Georgia's state capital from 1785 until 1795. During the cotton boom became the second largest inland cotton market in the world. Today Augusta is a medicine and manufacturing centre. Although officially the city is nicknamed The Garden City of the South, it is known more often as the Masters City due to the Augusta National Golf Club hosting the annual Masters Golf Tournament, an official money event on the PGA Tour.

One of Augusta’s most cherished attractions is the Augusta Museum of History. The museum curates a large and significant historical collection and acts as a historical research and resource center for historians, media, organizations and individuals. The museum is home to a permanent exhibitions including The Art of Healing, which chronicles the history of healthcare in Augusta, Into the Interior, which follows the railroad and banking operations in Augusta and Georgia and the very popular interactive "just for kids" exhibition.
