Hinesville is a city in and the county seat of Liberty County in the state of Georgia. It is located is 33 miles south-west of Savannah and 104 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida.

Hinesville was originally settled in by Puritans in 1754, established in 1777 and finally incorporated in 1916. It was named after Senator Charlton Hines and was home to three signers of the Declaration of Independence: Lyman Hall, George Walton and Button Gwinnett. The city is adjacent to Fort Stewart and its Military Museum, which focuses on the history of Fort Stewart, the 3rd Infantry Division and the 24th Infantry Division. Many soldiers from the base call Hinesville home.

The city’s position next to the Atlantic coast creates an abundance of coastal streams and waterways and residents enjoy the outdoor recreation that they bring with them. Tall pine trees, majestic oaks, deer, wild hogs, and other wildlife are the representative images of this significant city. The Cay Creek Wetlands is a popular waterway that displays some of Hinesville’s most beautiful flora and fauna. It is also the site of the historical Liberty Trail.

The Old Liberty County Jail is one of Hinesville most popular tourist attractions. The Jail was built in 1882 and contained modern conveniences such as running water, inside plumbing and fireplaces. The county ceased using the facility in 1972 and today runs it as an educational and historic attraction.
