Mableton is a census-designated place in Cobb County in the state of Georgia. It is located 14 miles west of Atlanta on the south side of Cobb County in the central-north part of the state.

Mableton was named for Robert Mable, a native of Scotland who immigrated to Savannah, Georgia for the 1822 Georgia Gold Land Lottery. Mable purchased 300 acres and in 1843 began construction of a plantation plain house which came to be known as the Mable House. Mrs Mable used the house as a field hospital during the Civil War caring for the injured soldiers herself. It was this act of kindness that permitted the house to be left intact after the war. The Southern Railway opened a train station in Mableton in 1881 and one year later a post office opened. The City was incorporated in 1912 but citizens voted to unincorporate it just four years later to avoid the raising of taxes to pay for needed road repairs.

Today the Mable House Complex includes the Arts Center, Barnes Amphitheatre and historic Mable House property. Gallery exhibitions, theatre productions, concerts, field trips, summer camps and tours are all held on site and in the fall the Friends of the Mable House host the fall Storytelling Festival.

One of Mableton’s top attractions is the Silver Comet Trail. This multi-use National Recreation Trail was built on an old railroad route and named after the Silver Comet passenger train that used the route from 1947 to 1969. The entire 61.5-mile Silver Comet Trail was paved in 2008 and is open for horses, dog walkers, walking and cycling.

Mableton has several great outdoor parks that provide its residents with recreational facilities and open spaces. Heritage Park features hiking trails, a boardwalk, picnic pavilions, an outdoor education building, and a historic cemetery and mill building. Lions Park features 2 Baseball fields, Batting cages, the South Cobb Community Center, and 2 Concession buildings. Other great parks include Nickajack Park, Thompson Park and Wallace Park.
