Rome is a city in and the county seat of Floyd County in the state of Georgia. It is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the north-western part of the state. It is also the principal city of the Rome, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Rome was founded at the convergence of the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers upon seven hills that surround where the city now sits. It was named as a commemoration of the Italian city of Rome and in 1929 Italian dictator Benito Mussolini gifted the city a replica of the statue of Romulus and Remus nursing from a mother wolf, a symbol of the original Rome, which still stands as a reminder today.

The city developed early as a trading place for cotton and other goods until in the 20th Century where industry moved towards carpets and textiles. The Rome Area History Museum preserves, interprets, and exhibits collections portraying the history of Rome and the surrounding area and has permanent exhibits including the Native Americans in Floyd County, the founding of Rome, the Civil War and the development of Rome’s culture, life-ways, and industries.

Today Rome carries great importance as a regional center for services such as medical care and education due to its location being central to the Interstate highways between Atlanta, Birmingham and Chattanooga. It has an active sports base having been the host city to the NAIA Football National Championship since 2008 and the home of the Rome Braves; a Class A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves since 2003. Sports tourism is a major industry in Rome and Floyd County with tennis tournaments alone attributing millions of dollars to the Rome economy each year.
