Smyrna is a city in Cobb County in the state of Georgia. It is located about 10 miles northwest of the state capital Atlanta and just a short drive from several other cities including Vinings, Marietta, Mableton and Sandy Springs. Smyrna is also part of the Atlanta metropolitan area.

The area which is now known as the city of Smyrna was first known for its religious encampment in the 1830’s. The Smyrna Camp Ground was known throughout Georgia and become a popular tourist location. The city developed rapidly after the completion of the Western and Atlantic Railroad in 1842 and was known as Varner’s Station, Ruff’s Siding, Neal Dow and Ruff’s Station. The city was finally incorporated with the name Smyrna in 1872.

Smyrna is also known today as the "Jonquil City” due to the thousands of jonquils that flourish in gardens and along the streets in early spring.

Two popular social hot spots in the city are the Village Green and Market Village. 33 acres of parks and green space are arranged within one mile of the city’s downtown which includes a library, community center, retail outlets and city hall and is the venue for summer concerts and family events. 304 acres of parklands and open space are located within 15 square miles providing residents well maintained options for jogging, swimming, tennis and golf courses.

Smyrna’s close proximity to Atlanta allows visitors and residents easy access to a selection of events, sights and recreational activities. Attractions in and around the area include the Chastain Amphitheatre, the Sandy Springs Cycling Challenge, Mableton’s Silver Comet Trail, Fernbank Science Center, Zoo Atlanta and Stone Mountain.
