Valdosta is city in Lowndes County in the state of Georgia. It is located in the far southern portion of the state near the Florida border along the Interstate 75 corridor. Valdosta is 123 miles north-west of Jacksonville, Florida and 77 miles north-east of Tallahassee, Florida.

In 1860, the development of the Gulf and Atlantic Railroad caused citizens of Troupville to relocate to the area now known as Valdosta. The county government also relocated and the city of Valdosta was incorporated. Valdosta was named after Governor George Troup’s estate, Val d'Osta, previously located in Troupville, which was in turn named after the Valle d'Aosta in Italy.

Valdosta was originally the center of long-staple cotton growing in the United States but today is a commercial center of South Georgia with numerous manufacturing plants producing tobacco, naval stores, turpentine, pine lumber and pulpwood.

The Lowndes County Courthouse was built around 1905 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is widely acknowledged as one of the most beautiful county courthouses in Georgia and is still used today for meetings, public display, events and political purposes.

Shopping is one of Valdosta's favourite attractions. The city provides visitors and residents with every kind of retail experience from quaint historic Remerton to downtown boutiques, and from factory directs outlet stores to the Colonial Mall. Valdosta Mall features national chain anchor stores like JCPenney, Sears, Office Depot, PetSmart, Belk, Old Navy, and Ross Stores.

Wild Adventures is a family-friendly theme park and zoo covering 150 acres with over 50 rides including nine roller coasters, more than 500 species of animals, shows, a water park, concerts and events such as the 4th of July Celebration, Halloween events Phobia and Kid-o-ween and A Wild Adventure Christmas. Splash Island features every type of fun water activity from water slides to private cabanas and from tropical lagoons to a 1,000 foot lazy river.

The Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area has well maintained hiking trails, a 2,000-foot boardwalk and a 54-foot observation tower that overlooks open prairie and a heron rookery. Water lovers enjoy canoe and boating trails that wind through the Blackgum Swamp allowing a unique perspective on the natural beauty of the land. Other attractions in and around the city include Watkins Music hall, Kinderlou Forest Golf Club, Stone Creek golf course, Remerton Mill Village, Fruits of the Garden Winery and Gifts, Charleston Place, Country Cobbler, Valdosta Mall, the Preferred Outlets at Lake Park and the Theatre Guild Valdosta.
