Kailua-Kona is a town on the Big Island of Hawaii in the American state of Hawaii. It is situated on the west coast between Kohala Coast at its north and Kau Desert to its South. It is also known simply as Kailua. The reason it is referred to as Kailua-Kona is to differentiate it from the Kailua town on Oahu.
The State of Hawaii is made up hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles and is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is a popular tourist's playground that provides everything a visitor could desire from laying in the sun all day to shopping, and from water based sports to exploring the vast array of unique flora and fauna.
The community of Kailua-Kona was originally established by King Kamehameha I and developed into a retreat for the Hawaiian royal family. Kailua-Kona had primarily been a small fishing village for many years; however recent real estate and construction booms have transformed it into an investment and tourism focal point.
Today the town provides ample activities for the outdoor lover including walking, hiking, swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, exploring, sunbathing, eating, sightseeing, boogie boarding and body surfing, whale and dolphin watching, visiting art galleries, farms and coffee plantations. Kailua-Kona is the center of commerce and tourism on West Hawaii and is served by Kona International Airport.
Attractions in and around the area include Mount Hualalai and Mauna Loa,Kailua Pier, royal residences Hulihe?e Palace, Kamakahonu and Ahu?ena Heiau, La?aloa Bay Park and Kahalu?u Bay, which has some of Hawaii's best snorkelling. The annual Ironman World Championship triathlon start and finish in Kailua and local festivals include the annual Kona Coffee Festival and the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.
