Pearl Harbor is a lagoon harbor on the island of O?ahu, in the American state of Hawaii. It is located west of Honolulu.

Pearl Harbor began as an extensive shallow embayment. The Hawaiians called it Wai Momi which means “pearl water” and also Pu?uloa which means “long hill.” In early Hawaiian legends the shark goddess, Ka?ahupahau, and her brother Kahi?uka made their home in this harbour. Pearl Harbour is known best for the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan on December 7, 1941. It was this action that brought the United States into World War II. Today most of the harbour and surrounding land is a United States Navy deep-water naval base. It is also home to the headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Pearl Harbor is situated only 26 miles drive from Downtown Honolulu. This allows easy access to the Honolulu International Airport as well as all of Honolulu’s recreational and cultural attractions including Hawaii State Art Museum , The Honolulu Academy of Arts, the Aloha Tower, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Beach.

The tourism industry is mainly centred in Waikiki. Many fine dining restaurants, casual eateries, entertainment and recreational facilities are located within a few blocks and are easily accessible by foot. World class hotels such as the Hilton, Sheraton and Hyatt operate along the iconic Waikiki Beach, which is known as one of the world’s most famous beach resorts.
