Pocatello is a city in and the county seat of Bannock County in the state of Idaho. It is located along the Portneuf River in the western foothills of the Rocky Mountains along the Oregon Trail. A small portion of Pocatello in the Fort Hall Indian Reservation lies in neighbouring Power County. Pocatello is also the principal city of the Pocatello metropolitan area, which encompasses all of Bannock and Power counties.

Pocatello Junction was founded as a stop along the Utah and Northern Railway route which arose from the Gold Rush of the 1860’s. The Portneuf Valley became an important conduit for the transportation of goods and freight and brought many people to the area. Once the gold rush dried up and prospectors had moved on, ranchers and farmers made the area their home and by 1882 many residential homes and businesses were operational. The city is named after Shoshoni tribe Chief Pocatello, who granted the right-of-way for the railroad across the Fort Hall Indian Reservation.

Today the city is the home of Idaho State University, the manufacturing facility of ON Semiconductor and the Holt Arena. The Arena is a multipurpose indoor stadium which hosts the Simplot Games, the nation's largest indoor high school track-and-field meet.

Pocatello remembers how it was once against the law not to smile with its annual Smile Fest and in 1987 the city was given the name “U. S. Smile Capital” by the American Bankers Association. Other events throughout the year include Wrangler Western Frontier Pro Rodeo, the Pocatello Marathon, concerts by the Idaho State Civic Symphony, and a host of performances at the L.E. and Thelma Stephens Performing Arts Center.

Attractions in and around the area include over 30 parks, the Museum of Natural History, Idaho State University, Fort Hall Replica, several golf courses, Ross Park Aquatic Complex, Nordic Center cross-country skiing, mountain biking & hiking trails, skate park, Pocatello Zoo, Bannock County Fairgrounds, Pebble Creek Ski Area, Old Town Pocatello and the Deleta Skating and Family Fun Centre. Pocatello is also just a few hours’ drive from Sun Valley, Salt Lake City, Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole.
