Arlington Heights is a village in Cook and Lake Counties in the state of Illinois. It is located about 25 miles northwest of Chicago in the west side of Wheeling Township and is notable for the absence of groves and trees.
Arlington Heights began as a stop on the Illinois & Wisconsin Railroad in 1835. Mr William Dunton laid out a small town, naming it after himself, and in 1887 the settlement was incorporated as Arlington Heights.
Arlington Heights is perhaps best known for the Arlington Park Race Track and the Arlington Million, a Breeders' Cup qualifying event. The Arlington Park Race Track was founded in 1927 by the California millionaire Harry D. “Curly” Brown upon land formerly consisting of 12 farms. Camp McDonald and two country clubs were founded in the 1930s and in 1989 a new six story Grandstand was completed.
Other attractions in and around the area include the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, which has one of the largest collections in the state, and the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre. The Arlington Heights Historical Museum is a popular tourist stop. The Museum collects and preserves significant materials related to its past and shares them through educational and recreational activities that promote community heritage and pride.
Events in town include many farmers markets, an Autumn Harvest, Downtown trick or treat, Christmas tree lighting, Sounds of Summer Concerts, Frontier Days and an annual Irish festival.
