Champaign is a city in Champaign County in the state of Illinois. It is located 135 miles south of Chicago, 124 miles west of Indianapolis, Indiana, and 178 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri.

Champaign was originally called "West Urbana" when the Illinois Central Railroad laid its rail track just west of downtown Urbana. The settlement was founded in 1855 and acquired a city charter in 1860.

The city today is surrounded by farming communities. It shares the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and benefits from a number of well-known technology start-up companies. Locals lovingly referred to their city as the hub of the Silicon Prairie.

A highlight in Champaign’s history happened on September 22, 1985, when the first Farm Aid concert was held at the University of Illinois' Memorial Stadium. Over 80,000 supporters attended raising more than $7 million for American family farmers.
