Decatur is a city in and the county seat of Macon County in the state of Illinois. It is located along the Sangamon River and Lake Decatur in Central Illinois.

The city was founded in 1823 and is named after War of 1812 naval hero Stephen Decatur, Jr. Its motto is "Decatur, We Like it Here" however the unofficial and more popular motto is “Decatur, the Soybean Capital of the World". Decatur today is a small city with homes and park areas facing the Lake. It is a primarily a college town with tree lined streets, historic brick downtown buildings and vast industrial and agricultural processing production. This city is home of private Millikin University, public Richland Community College and is annual host to the LPGA Futures Tour and Tate & Lyle Players Championships, which are held each June.

Decatur was the first Illinois home of Abraham Lincoln when he settled with his family in 1830. He later practiced law in the city after moving to nearby Springfield.

Over 30 miles of shoreline allows the city abundant opportunities for fishing, sailing, boating, skiing, tubing and water-side relaxation. The Macon County Conservation District offers more than 3,200 acres of walking trails, prairies and abundant wildlife. More than 2,000 acres of park and recreational area are scattered throughout the city. More than 130 festivals including the Lakeside Music and Arts Festival and the Decatur Celebration are hosted annually. Decatur is also home to the largest free family street festival in the state, The Farm Progress Show which is billed as the “Super Bowl” of agricultural exhibitions.

Decatur has many art galleries showcasing local and national artists. Museums are plentiful and include the Governor Oglesby’s Mansion, Mueller Museum, Macon County Museum and the Milliken Homestead. Other attractions in and around Decatur include the Decatur Ghost Tour, Decatur Square, The Scovill Children’s Zoo, Children’s Museum of Illinois, Little Mountain Golf Course, Your Dekalb Farmers Market, Decatur Historical Courthouse and the Waffle House Museum.
