Des Plaines is a city in Cook County in the state of Illinois. It is located less than 20 miles north-west of Chicago in the northern-eastern part of the state.

The city is named after The Des Plaines River which runs through the city just east of its downtown. The City’s name is taken from the French language, meaning “of the plains” and is nicknamed the "City of Destiny”.

The first white settlers arrived in the area now known as Des Plains in 1833 and were subsequently joined by many German immigrants through the 1840s and 1850s. The Illinois and Wisconsin Land Company developed a steam powered mill next to the river to support the development of their railway, which was ready for its first official stop in 1854. By 1957 Socrates Rand had bought the mill, converting it into a grist mill and attracting local farmers, and the settlement became known as the Town of Rand. In 1869, the subdivision changed its name to Des Plaines and the Village of Des Plaines was incorporated.

Des Plains offers its visitors and residents a plethora of entertainment and educational and recreational facilities. The Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame pays tribute to the sports legends and their unforgettable moments of greatness. The Mystic Waters Family Aquatic Park is one of the largest and most beautiful waterparks in Northern Illinois. The Park boasts two 37 foot slides, Crocodile Cove lazy river and an expansive Dolphin Bay with a zero depth leisure pool with fountains, jet sprays and a child-size dolphin slide.

In 2008, the Illinois Gaming Board awarded the state's 10th and last casino license to Midwest Gaming and Entertainment LLC. The River Casino stands today as a 140,000-square-foot casino on approximately 21 acres, and containing nearly 1,050 slots, 48 table games and seven bars and restaurants that cater to a variety of tastes.

Attractions in and around Des Plaines include Rivers Casino, McDonald's Museum, Lake Opeka in Lake Park, Maryville Academy, Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame, Methodist Camp Ground, Des Plaines Public Library, Des Plaines Theatre and the Des Plaines Forest Preserve.
