Elgin is a city in Kane County in the state of Illinois. It is located about 40 miles north-west of Chicago on the Fox River.

New York brothers James T. Gifford and Hezekiah Gifford established a city on the stagecoach route from Chicago to Galena at a spot where the Fox River could be bridged. The city was established in 1835 and named after the Scottish hymn "The Song of Elgin."

Today Elgin is a warm and friendly community known for its historic architecture and landmarks from the Victorian era. The landscape retains the natural beauty and habitat diversity that first attracted settlers. On the city’s eastern border, the 4,200 acre Poplar Creek Preserve includes bike trails, hiking trails and equestrian trails. Lords Park is one of Elgin’s more popular city parks. It covers 112 acres and includes the Elgin Public Museum, a petting zoo, and a herd of American bison. Golf courses within Elgin include the Wing Park Golf Corse, Highlands of Elgin, the Elgin Country Club, and Bowes Creek Country Club.

Elgin is home to the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Elgin Choral Union, the Elgin Children's Chorus, and several established theatre groups including the Janus Theatre Company, Elgin Theatre Company, Fox Valley Youth Theatre, and Nothing Special Production.

Attractions in and around Elgin include Hemmens Cultural Centre, Festival Park, Walton Island and the Grand Victoria Casino Elgin which is a 400 foot picturesque riverboat which features 16-foot ceilings and more than 1,000 slots and a variety of table games. Annual events include the Puerto Rican Festival, Fox trot, Halloween Howl, Pub Crawl, 4th of July and Brewfest.
