Evanston is a suburban municipality in Cook County in the state of Illinois. It is located 10 miles north of downtown Chicago on the edge of Lake Michigan.

The North-western University and Garrett Biblical Institute was founded by a group of Methodist business leaders in 1851 along Lake Michigan’s wooded lake side. Their planned city that followed was given the name Evanston in 1857 after one of their leaders, John Evans. Evanston was formally incorporated as a town on December 29, 1863.

In the early 20th century Evanston was called "The City of Churches" but today is more commonly referred to as “E-Town" and is included in the greater metropolitan area known as Chicagoland.

Evanston is known as being one of three possible places of origin of the Ice Cream Sundae. The city was one of the first towns to pass the law prohibiting the selling of soda water on a Sunday around 1890, law that spread through Midwestern America. The alternative was to serve ice cream sodas minus the soda, leaving only ice cream and syrup. Similar stories are told claiming origin in both Ithaca, New York and Two Rivers, Wisconsin.

Evanston has plenty of entertainment opportunities ranging from educational facilities through to sporting events. Shopping is popular in downtown Evanston and along Dempster Street with retail outlets providing a selection of goods from high-end boutiques to local bakeries.

The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian focuses exclusively on the history and culture of North American native civilizations and includes exquisite displays of memorabilia ranging from the Paleo-Indian period through present day.
