Naperville is a city in DuPage and Will Counties in the state of Illinois. It is located about 30 miles west of Chicago in the north-eastern part of the state.
The history of Naperville began when Joseph Naper arrived upon the west bank of the DuPage River with his family and friends in 1831. By the end of the settlements first year the population had soared to over 100. Fort Payne was built at protect the village from an anticipated attack by the Sauk tribe during the Black Hawk War and in 1834 when the Settlement became a stage-coach stop between Chicago and Galena, the construction of the Pre-Emption House was completed. Today Fort Payne and the Pre-Emption House stand as part of Naper Settlement outdoor museum village. The Naper's Settlement held the county seat in Du Page between 1839 and 1868. In 1857 it gained official incorporation as the Village of Naperville. Reincorporation as a city occurred in 1890.
A decision was made in the 1970’s to make and keep all parking in downtown Naperville free to combat competition from neighbouring retailers, this remains the case today.
The Naperville area is home to many popular retailers, restaurants and shopping centres. It is home to the Naperville Independent Film Festival which showcases the work of independent filmmakers each year and has more than 600 buildings that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Naperville Park District provides quality leisure and recreational activities for its residents including over 130 parks and four sports complexes, the Naperville Riverwalk, Centennial Beach and Park, Frontier Sports Complex and Knoch Knolls Park.
Public Art decorates downtown and brightens the Riverwalk. A stunning four-part ceramic mural highlights the city’s rich art culture and includes the "River of Life," off West Jefferson; "Man's Search for Knowledge through the Ages," in front of Nichols Library; and "The Dandelion Fountain" near the Riverwalk. The Riverwalk is a 3.5 mile brick path that runs along the shore of the DuPage river and past the 160 foot Moser Tower Millennium Carillon, which with 72 bronze-cast bells is one of only four grand carillons in the world.
